Homemade Apple Sauce

Ingredients
  

  • 6 cups apples (peeled, cored, and sliced)
  • ¾ cup water
  • ¼ cup sugar
  • ½ tsp cinnamon
  • tsp cloves

Instructions
 

  • Peel, core, and chop your apples.
  • Add all ingredients to a medium saucepan.
  • Bring to a boil, then reduce to a simmer and cook, covered, until apples are soft, stirring occasionally.
  • When apples are tender, stir rapidly with a whisk to break them up, or mash them with a potato masher or run them through a food mill.
  • If the apple sauce is too watery, simmer slowly with the lid off, stirring often, until the water has boiled off.
  • Cool in the refrigerator to allow them to set up and then serve.

Notes

Some people like to add a dash of salt or lemon juice, but I don't find it necessary. You can add them if you like.
The amount of sugar depends on how sweet your apples are and how sweet you like your apple sauce. You can use less or more, or even use brown sugar for additional flavor. The nutrition facts are based on using ¼ cup.
Slow Cooker Instructions: Reduce water to ¼ cup. Add all ingredients to a 2-quart slow cooker and cook on high for four hours or until apples are thoroughly tender.
